MEDIA STATEMENT – BLSA introduces an innovative online tool to follow the progress of government reforms

Johannesburg, 14 August 2025 — Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) has unveiled the BLSA Reform Tracker, an innovative online platform designed to monitor and assess the progress of key government reforms that impact the business environment and economic growth.

Developed by research consultancy Krutham, the platform was launched today at an event in Johannesburg, featuring keynote addresses by Minister Maropene Ramokgopa (Presidency: Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation) and Deputy Finance Minister Ashor Sarupen. A dynamic panel discussion moderated by Stephen Grootes included insights from Rudi Dicks (Operation Vulindlela), Khulekani Mathe (BUSA), and Dr Roy Havemann (BER) on the role of reforms in transforming South Africa’s economy.

The Cape Town leg of the launch takes place on 15 August, with Premier Alan Winde and Deputy Minister Sarupen addressing guests. BLSA CEO Busisiwe Mavuso will join a panel of economists and reform experts to explore the theme: “Why Do Policy Reforms Matter?”

Accessible at https://tracker.blsa.org.za/, the Reform Tracker evaluates nearly 240 reform deliverables across three categories: criminal justice, governance, and economic reforms. Each reform is reviewed quarterly and scored based on its progress—whether it’s on track, facing challenges, or encountering critical obstacles.

“The Tracker is a strategic tool to support government and business in understanding reform dynamics—what’s working, what’s stalled, and what’s needed to unlock progress,” said Busisiwe Mavuso, BLSA CEO. “It empowers business leaders to make informed decisions based on credible, up-to-date data.”

The first Quarterly Review reveals encouraging momentum:

  • 26 reforms completed
  • 59 showing strong progress
  • 108 on track but needing attention
  • 19 facing major obstacles

Significant strides have been made in electricity, financial sector, and governance reforms. BLSA will continue to survey its members quarterly to gauge reform impact and identify priority areas for business.
